Housekeeping: Terminal-Based GitHub Issue Management

Open Source Creator & Maintainer View on GitHub

A Laravel package that brings GitHub housekeeping tasks directly into the developer's terminal, streamlining workflow and reducing context switching.

Laravel PHP GitHub API CLI

The Brief

Developers constantly switch between their terminal and GitHub to manage housekeeping tasks - reviewing issues, triaging bugs, and planning work. This context switching disrupts flow and reduces productivity.

The Problem:

  • Constant context switching between terminal and browser
  • Difficulty prioritising housekeeping tasks during development
  • No quick way to start work on GitHub issues from the command line

The Strategy

Build a Laravel package that integrates directly with the GitHub API, allowing developers to view, filter, and action housekeeping tasks without leaving their terminal. The goal was to reduce friction and keep developers in their flow state.

Why This Approach:
Terminal-based tools are faster and more efficient for developers who spend most of their time in the command line. By bringing GitHub functionality to where developers already work, we eliminate unnecessary context switches.

The Execution

GitHub API Integration
Built a robust integration with GitHub's API to fetch issues, pull requests, and project boards. Implemented authentication and rate limiting to ensure reliable operation.

Terminal UI
Created an intuitive command-line interface that displays housekeeping tasks in a readable, actionable format. Developers can quickly scan, filter, and select tasks.

Workflow Commands
Implemented commands to start work on issues directly from the terminal - creating branches, updating issue status, and linking commits to issues automatically.

Laravel Package Architecture
Structured as a Laravel package for easy installation and configuration. Follows Laravel conventions and integrates seamlessly with existing Laravel projects.

The Result

Housekeeping reduces context switching and streamlines developer workflow by bringing GitHub task management into the terminal.

Outcomes:

  • Zero context switching for issue management
  • Faster task prioritisation and workflow initiation
  • Improved developer productivity and flow state
  • Open source contribution to the Laravel ecosystem
