About
About Farington Consultancy
Farington Consultancy is led by Gordon Thomson, a senior engineer and former CTO. Gordon still writes code every day. He also leads teams, shapes architecture, and helps businesses turn ideas into working products. The two are not separate. The best technical decisions come from people who understand what it takes to build and ship software.
From Initial Commit to Acquisition
Gordon spent over six years as CTO of a B2B SaaS platform, navigating the full journey from inception to acquisition. That included writing the first lines of code, building the engineering team, presenting technical strategy to the board, and passing due diligence scrutiny from the acquiring company.
Before that, five years growing a platform from two clients to twenty at the University of St Andrews. The pattern is consistent: long tenures, deep commitment, and real ownership of outcomes.
What Farington Consultancy Does
Most engagements involve writing code. Building features, fixing problems, and shipping products alongside your team. But the experience to step back and ask whether you are building the right thing, in the right way, at the right time, is always present.
That might look like:
- Joining your team as a senior developer on a contract
- Acting as a fractional CTO to shape technical direction
- Working as a technical partner for your agency
- Running a feasibility study before you commit to a build
- Auditing your architecture and team structure
- Leading a project from concept through to delivery
The common thread is practical, hands-on involvement. Not slide decks from the sidelines.

How We Work
The arrangement matters less than the problem. Permanent role, contract, fractional engagement. The question is whether the work is interesting, whether the people are serious about solving it, and whether there is a real stake in the outcome.
Gordon's track record reflects this. Six years at one company. Five years at another. Farington Consultancy is built for long-term relationships, not short cycling between engagements.
Professional Partnership
Farington Consultancy operates as a UK limited company (SC862880), offering a professional, high-accountability partnership. Whether you need a senior developer to strengthen your team, a fractional CTO to guide strategy, or someone to take a project from idea to production, the goal is the same: make sure your technology works for your business, not against it.
